Clothing Made in Canada — From Organic Cotton Yarn to Finished Garment

Most clothing labelled "made in Canada" isn't really made here. The garment is sewn overseas, shipped in finished, and given a maple-leaf hang tag once it lands. At TURTLEGROOVE — a female-founded brand based in Ontario — made in Canada means exactly that: our embroidered organic cotton sweatshirts and t-shirts are knit, dyed, cut, sewn, and embroidered in Canada — start to finish. No shortcuts, no relabelled imports.

What "Made in Canada" actually means

It's one of fashion's most misused phrases. Under most interpretations, a brand can import a finished garment and still call it "made in Canada" as long as some final step — printing, packing, or labelling — happens locally.

We hold ourselves to a higher bar. Every TURTLEGROOVE garment is manufactured through a full Canadian supply chain:

  • Knitting the organic cotton yarn into fabric — in Toronto, Ontario
  • Dyeing with non-toxic dyes — in Toronto
  • Cutting & sewing into the finished blank — in Toronto
  • Embroidering your design — in thread, never printed — and final finishing at our facility in Burlington, Ontario

The only step that doesn't happen in Canada is growing the cotton — and it can't, because cotton doesn't grow in our climate. We import GOTS-certified organic cotton yarn, then everything from fibre to finished garment happens here: knit, dyed, cut, and sewn in Toronto, then embroidered and finished in Burlington.

Why buy clothing made in Canada?

  • It lasts longer. Domestic manufacturing means we oversee quality at every step. Our pieces are built for 200+ wears — not a single season.
  • It's more transparent. A short, local supply chain means we know exactly who makes your clothing and how. No mystery factories.
  • It's lower-impact. Producing closer to home — and made-to-order, never in bulk — cuts the waste and freight emissions of mass overseas production.
  • It supports Canadian work. Every order keeps skilled manufacturing jobs here at home.

Our Canadian-made range

Everything we make is unisex, embroidered, and built from GOTS-certified organic cotton fibre:

Each design is hand-drawn and stitched in thread, so it wears and washes for years without cracking or fading the way prints do.

Made responsibly, too

Made in Canada is only part of it. Our clothing is also GOTS-certified organic cotton fibre, embroidered with recycled-polyester thread, shipped in biodegradable packaging, and every order plants 2 trees and removes 3 plastic bottles from the ocean. Frequently asked questions

Is TURTLEGROOVE clothing really made in Canada?

Yes. Our garments are knit, dyed, cut, and sewn in Toronto, Ontario, then embroidered and finished at our Burlington, Ontario facility. We don't import finished garments and relabel them.

Where is your clothing made?

Every piece is produced in Canada — knit, dyed, cut, and sewn in Toronto, with embroidery and finishing in Burlington, Ontario.

Is the organic cotton grown in Canada?

No — cotton can't be grown in Canada's climate. We import GOTS-certified organic cotton yarn, then the entire garment production (knitting, dyeing, cutting, sewing in Toronto, and embroidery in Burlington) happens in Canada.

What makes TURTLEGROOVE different from other "made in Canada" brands?

Many brands import finished clothing and only print or label it locally. We manufacture the full garment through a Canadian supply chain — a genuinely made-in-Canada product, not an assembled-or-finished one.

Is the clothing GOTS certified?

The organic cotton fibre we use is GOTS-certified (certificates are independently audited and publicly verifiable). The certification is held at the fibre/supplier level — the standard model for brands that don't run their own GOTS-certified factory.
