You Wear Too Many Chemicals: What's Really in Your Clothes

What chemicals are in your clothes — dyes, finishes and synthetic fibres explained.

You read food labels. You think about what you breathe. But the thing that touches your body the most — for roughly 24 hours a day, against your skin, through sweat and heat — gets almost none of that scrutiny. Your clothes.

Most fabric isn't just fibre. It's fibre plus the chemistry used to colour it, soften it, make it wrinkle-free, water-resistant, or simply cheap to produce. Some of that chemistry is harmless and rinses away. Some of it is designed to stay. And when there's no certification on the label, you have no way of knowing which is which.

This isn't a reason to panic — it's a reason to pay attention. Here's what's actually in the average garment, how it reaches you, and the simple ways to lower your exposure.

Your clothes are a chemical environment

Skin isn't a sealed wall. It's an active surface, and heat, moisture, and friction all make it more permeable. A warm body, a sweaty workout, a fabric that doesn't breathe — that's the exact condition in which certain low-weight chemicals in a textile can transfer onto, and in some cases into, your skin. For most healthy adults the doses are small. But for people with sensitive skin, for young children (who wear, chew, and sweat into their clothes constantly), and for anything you wear day in and day out, what's in the fabric genuinely matters.

What's actually in the average garment

You don't need a chemistry degree — just a sense of the main culprits:

  • Synthetic dyes. The vivid, fade-resistant colours in cheap clothing usually come from synthetic dyes. A subset — certain azo dyes — can break down into aromatic amines, some of which are classified as carcinogenic and are restricted in the EU. They're still widely used where oversight is looser.   • Easy-care finishes (formaldehyde). “Wrinkle-free,” “non-iron,” and “shrink-resistant” finishes are often built on formaldehyde-based resins, a known skin and respiratory irritant.
  • PFAS — the “forever chemicals.” Used for water- and stain-resistance, PFAS are prized because they don't break down — which is exactly the problem in the environment and the body. They're increasingly banned in textiles in the EU and US states.
  • Heavy metals. Some bright pigments and plastisol prints rely on metals like lead, cadmium, or antimony, which accumulate in the body rather than flushing out.
  • Plastic itself. Polyester, nylon, and acrylic are plastic fibres. Beyond any added chemistry, they shed microscopic plastic fibres every wash — microplastics now found in tap water, human blood, and lung tissue. Which fabrics shed and which don't.

How this reaches the way you live and breathe

It's not only skin contact. Textile chemicals leave fabric in more than one way:

  • On your skin. Dye and finish residues are a documented cause of allergic contact dermatitis — itching, redness, rashes — especially from synthetic fabrics worn close and warm.
  • In the air at home. Garments shed fibres and off-gas finishes into household dust, one of the routes researchers track for indoor chemical exposure.
  • In the water and back to us. The microfibres synthetics shed in the wash flow through treatment plants into rivers and oceans, then back up the food chain.

The honest framing: the acute risk from any single t-shirt is low, and the long-term human-health picture is still being researched. What's not in question is that conventional textile manufacturing uses substances that are bioactive and persistent — and that you currently have very little visibility into which of your clothes contain them.

Why “natural” and “organic” on the label aren't enough

Here's the catch most shoppers miss: “organic” describes how the cotton was farmed. It says nothing about what happened to that cotton in the factory. Organic cotton can still be dyed with azo dyes or finished with formaldehyde. A “natural” label tells you the fibre isn't synthetic — not that the garment is free of harmful chemistry.

To know that, you need a certification that tests the finished product or controls the whole process.

How to lower your chemical load

You don't have to overhaul your wardrobe overnight. A few habits do most of the work:

  1. Look for OEKO-TEX Standard 100. It tests the finished garment for over a thousand harmful substances — including restricted dyes, formaldehyde, and PFAS. Its strictest class is built for babies.

  3. Choose natural fibres for high-contact, high-wash items. Everyday t-shirts and sweatshirts are where organic cotton makes the biggest difference — no microplastic shedding, breathable, and no plastic chemistry against your skin.
  4. Wash new clothes before wearing. A first wash removes a meaningful share of surface dye and finishing residue.
  5. Be skeptical of “magic” finishes. “Stain-proof,” “wrinkle-free,” and “water-repellent” usually mean added chemistry. Decide if you actually need it.
  6. Buy fewer, better, longer-lasting pieces. Less volume through your wardrobe means less exposure, less shedding, and less waste.
